Got Questions?
- Don't Rush to Paint Those Walls!
When moving into a new home, often the first thing people want to do is paint the walls. After all, an empty house is easier to clean, tape, and paint than a house filled with furniture, right? While this seems like a good idea in theory, here are a few reasons to wait a little while before you pull out the paintbrush.
Coordination: If you choose paint colors before you move your stuff into the house, most likely you will just choose colors you like, or colors that are on trend. While you should definitely go with a color you like, you want to make sure it coordinates with the furniture you have. That is, unless you are planning on purchasing all new furniture and textiles, in which case you should have everything purchased before you paint the walls. It is much easier to match paint to fabric than to match fabric to paint!
Quality: Never rush to get a paint job done. Take your time and do it properly. If you are trying to paint the whole house before you move in, there is a good chance you may skim over vital steps. If you want your walls to look great, it is important to do what is necessary. Often this includes washing the walls, patching any holes, priming if needed, taping, cutting in, and rolling two or three coats. By taking on your painting project one room at a time, your quality will be much better.
Longevity: If you rush to choose paint colors before you move in, you run the risk of disliking your choices much faster. If you live in the house for a little while before you paint, you can figure out how light hits the walls- perhaps one bedroom gets very little sunlight. You probably don’t want to paint that room navy blue. You might also decide that the curtains you purchased really don’t work with the couch, which could impact your paint color decision.
If you only want to paint the walls once, consider living in your home for a little while. Get a feel for what you like and don’t like, and what furniture is here to stay. Take on the project one room at a time, and do a great job! If you are moving into a home that REALLY needs paint, consider going with a neutral base throughout the house. You can then take your time in adding accent colors here and there. Good luck!
