Earth Day 2012

Earth Day 2012

Earth Day 2012 is coming up this Sunday.

Do you plan to celebrate? We think our Earth is pretty great, and today we are sharing a few of our favorite easy energy (and money!) saving tips.

Lighting: lighting typically makes up about 15% of a home energy bill, so next time you need to replace a light bulb, purchase an energy efficient bulb (LED or CFL). Look for the “Energy Star” symbol. Also remember to turn off all lights when they are not in use, and encourage kids to do the same!

Electronics: unplug electronics that do not get used often (yes, even “sleeping” electronics use electricity!) and plug those that do get used frequently into a power strip that can easily be switched off. This not only saves you electricity, but reduces the risk of electrical fire as well.

Heating and Cooling: close curtains on warm summer days and invest in a programmable thermostat if you don’t have one. It may cost a little more upfront, but you will quickly save money on your heating and cooling bill when your thermostat is set to a higher (summer) or lower (winter) temperature when you are away.

If you have other simple tips, please share them in the comments! We are always looking for new ways to save energy and money.
