Got Questions?
- Floors amd Moving
It would be terrific if you could order the weather for your moving day just like you order takeout food. Sunny, not too hot with a light breeze on the side. Perfect. In reality, the weather can present a challenge for your moving plans. Whether you are moving in the dead of winter or the peak of summer an inclement day can threaten to damage your floors beyond repair. Check out these ideas for protecting the floors at both your current and new home.
Carpets
Most home improvement or hardware stores carry a self-adhesive, non-slip plastic film. This plastic film is designed to adhere to carpets to keep from shifting but pull up easily with no adhesive residue left behind. A multiple surface version is also available to use on hard flooring. Old bed sheets, towels or drop-cloths can be a suitable alternative to save a few dollars. Cardboard or flattened boxes, area rugs or carpet remnants can also help keep carpeting clean. However, to avoid possible slip or tripping issues be sure to secure any of the budget alternatives with tape.
Hard flooring
The same self-adhesive plastic film we mentioned above is available for hard flooring. This protective covering is also available in a specialty paper version if you prefer using less plastic. You are a bit limited with budget alternatives on hard flooring due to the slipping concern. Drop cloths or towels are an option but only if you secure them. Area rugs with rubber backing or exercise mats are good choices as well. Using plywood is your best option when moving appliances or extremely heavy items like a piano.
A few unique options
In addition to the ideas we’ve mentioned so far, we found a couple of other items to consider. If you are a DIY mover, look for furniture sliders to make moving the big stuff a bit easier. These disks are a padded slider placed under the furniture that protect wooden floors and hard flooring and even work on carpet. Another floor covering product to consider is Ram Board designed for contractors. This heavy-duty temporary flooring is safe for wood, concrete, marble or tile. Depending on the type and age of the flooring you are trying to protect this product may be worth the investment.
Of course, the best way to protect your floors is to work with the professionals at Good Stuff Movers. We will work with you to make sure your belongings are moved safely and with the least impact on your home.
