Fun with Numbers: Americans and the Moving Industry

Most elementary school students would argue that numbers are anything but fun.  We respectfully disagree.  Numbers may not exactly be fun but they can tell an interesting story about businesses like the moving industry.  The team at the American Moving & Storage Association keep tabs on the trends in our industry and we discovered a few facts that provide some interesting insight into this $12.6 billion industry.

Fun Fact #1: We are a diverse industry

The typical moving company fits into the small business category with about 48% employing 5 people or less.  We come in all shapes and sizes including independent full service movers, large corporate organizations, van lines and agents, international movers and auto transporters.  Small but mighty we employ 122,600 people nationwide with an annual payroll of $3.6 billion. A combined fleet of well over 50,000 trucks including 32,000 tractor units for pulling semi-trailers and 18,000 straight trucks suggests that movers are in demand.

Fun Fact #2: Moving is top dog

The top three services provided include local and long-distance transportation of household and office goods; warehousing and storage services; and packing and packaging services.  The combined industry revenue totals more than $12.6 billion annually.  However, nearly 70% of that revenue comes from local or long-distance transportation service. And of the moving services revenue, 73% consists of household goods for individuals and families.  The rest is made up of office relocations, computer equipment and trade show exhibit moves.

Fun Fact #3: Americans move a lot

Statistically speaking we are a country on the move. The folks at the Census Bureau report that approximately 35.9 million Americans (or 15.3 million households @ 2.34 persons per household) relocate annually.  A little more than 80% relocate within the same state, 13% move to a different state and the remainder heads out of the country.

One of our favorite statistics found that more than 80% of all moves have no claim filed against the movers.  We are proud to contribute to that 80% figure because nothing is better than a stress free and trouble free move.

Across town or across the country, Americans are on the move. If 2015 is your year to upgrade, downsize, job transfer, retire or head for warmer weather make the call to the only Twin Cities area mover with the Super Service Award from Angie’s List for 12 years in a row!
