How To Move a Washer and Dryer

Washing machine and dryer in new home.

Moving a washing machine, dryer, or both requires careful planning and preparation. Keep in mind that these appliances are heavy and bulky, weighing an average of 150 lbs each (sometimes more depending on the model), which makes them more challenging to maneuver through doors, narrow hallways, and staircases.

Due to this level of difficulty, it’s best to hire professional movers to get the job done and avoid injury to yourself and your machines. However, if you have experience moving heavy items and feel confident in your ability to do so safely, here are some helpful tips to streamline the process.

Before getting started

Washers and dryers can be challenging to move on your own, especially when navigating tight spaces and corners. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have someone help you (whether a friend or family member) and have the following tools on hand:

  • Appliance dollies
  • Moving straps
  • Protective padding or moving blankets
  • Measuring tape

These tools can help distribute the weight of the appliances and make it easier to transport them through doorways and around obstacles without causing damage.

How To Move a Washer and Dryer to Your New Home

Before you start moving any appliances, be sure to grab your measuring tape. Measure all spaces and doorways to help plan out the best route for transporting these items from your current home to the new one.

Once that’s complete, follow these next steps.

  1. Turn off your appliances: Shut off the washer and dryer and unplug them from the electrical outlet. Remember to turn off the water supply and disconnect the inlet hoses and dryer vent hose.
  2. Secure loose parts: Make sure all loose parts, such as dryer cords or washer hoses, are properly secured to prevent tripping hazards.
  3. Slide the appliance onto the dolly: To put a washer or dryer on an appliance dolly, you should first tilt the appliance backward. Then, carefully slide the dolly under the washer or dryer. Once the dolly is in position, slowly tilt the appliance back onto the dolly. Ensure that the appliance is securely in place before moving it.
  4. Use straps: It’s a good idea to strap the washer and dryer to the dolly to securely hold them in place during the move. Using straps can help prevent each appliance from shifting or falling off the dolly, ensuring a safe and smooth transportation.
  5. Load into the moving truck: Carefully wheel the appliances out of your home and towards the moving truck. Use a ramp to load them onto the truck. Position them securely in the truck to prevent movement during transit.

Tips for Avoiding Injury

When moving appliances, boxes, or other items, it’s essential to prioritize safety to avoid injury. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Use proper lifting techniques: Any time you move an item, bend your knees, keep your back straight, and lift with your legs to avoid strain on your back.
  • Clear the path: Create a clear path through the home to the moving truck to avoid tripping or obstacles.
  • Use moving equipment: Consider using a dolly or hand truck to transport items, reducing the risk of strain or injury.
  • Seek assistance: Enlist the help of others when moving to share the load and ensure safe handling.
