Managing a Long Distance Move

Managing a long distance move is overwhelming! The thought of starting a new school, new job, adjusting to a new community and settling into your new home is a lot to take in! Luckily, we’re experts in helping our clients make long distance moves so we have a few tips to share!

Planning For a Long Distance Move

If you’re making a long-distance move, things can get expensive quick. Take a look at your belongings and getting rid of what you absolutely do not need (or can easily replace) in your new home! Follow the rule of donating, dumping, or selling when deciding how to get rid of unnecessary items. If you’re more concerned with time than money, donating items is a good option. Places such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, or a local thrift shop will likely take in your gently-used items. Depending on the wear and tear of your belongings, it might be best to throw them away or bring them to the local dump.

Bulk Trash Collection Tip: If you’re rid of old couches, mattresses, or other bulk items make sure you arrange a special bulk trash collection for these items. Leaving these items sitting in the alley will land you a hefty collection fee, which if you’re moving long distance will probably want to avoid.

If you want to try to make a pretty penny on some of your items, plan ahead. Try to sell big ticket items like couches or media consoles first. Trying reaching out to friends and family in the area who might be willing to take some furniture off your shoulders for a decent price. And depending on where you live, yard/garage sales, Craigslist, or consignment shops might work too!

Get Help Packing

You can get help from your friends and family packing, but depending on the size of your move it might be worth hiring professionals. At Good Stuff Moving, we offer different professional packing services. The benefit of hiring a professional is dual fold; 1. They’re professionals, so they know how to pack things so they have the least chance of breaking. 2. Removing yourself from packing will allow you to oversee things and avoid bringing or leaving things behind that you didn’t intend to.

Whether you pack yourself or hire help, we suggest using the one-year rule. If you haven’t used something in one-year, give it away. You most likely won’t use it ever again if it hasn’t seen the light of day in over a year.

Hire a Driver

We suggest hiring us a to do the driving for you during your move. This way you can get to your new destination with ease. Most people underestimate the difficulty in driving a moving truck such as a U-Haul. They can be tough to navigate, especially if you’ve never handled one before. And traveling thousands of miles across the country for a long distance move might not be the best time to try your hand at it. Let us take the wheel and we’ll meet you at your new home!
