No junk drawer in 2013

You know it, in the kitchen; it has rubber bands, take out menus, twist ties, chip clips, keys to unknown locks and random notes to self. It is so full you can barely open it much less tell what’s inside. Organize those take out menus in a binder, chuck the keys and put the rubber bands, chip clips and twist ties in a baggie. It may still all end up in the drawer but it’s transformed from junk to utility drawer, resolve to keep it that way.

Should old acquaintance be forgot?

Yes, if they are never brought to mind but instead clutter your closet, then absolutely out with the old. If you can’t remember the last acquaintance with that cable knit sweater or circa 1980’s exercise bike then garage sale it, donate it, even if you have to dump it, resolve not to bring it with you on your move. In addition to freeing yourself of unused stuff, you will save time and money on moving day.

Despite our national dysfunction with getting organized most of us have fairly organized homes but we know we could do better. Do you have a room that is kind of like the junk drawer? It’s the room we don’t often use and it becomes a catchall for things we don’t know what to do with. Then it becomes the room we can’t use because it is full of things we don’t know what to do with.

Like the cluttered closet and the messy junk drawer the sacrificed room will need some purging. The Organizing Junkie has some great tips on purging before a move.
