Green or environmentally preferable products are growing in demand for an expanding range of household products that we use everyday.  The great news is that increased demand has resulted in a wider choice of products with great availability and affordability.  Early in 2013 we shared this article about going green with cleaning products.  We decided to update you on the latest offerings and new ideas for keeping your home and family safe and healthy.

Party Supplies

With a full month left until Labor Day there’s still plenty of time for summer cookouts, picnics and camping adventures.  The folks at Greener Country have a large selection of products that make sense for your next outdoor party.  Biodegradable trash bags are always a good choice.  Be sure to swap those paper products with cups, plates and utensils made from corn, wheat straw or sugarcane which makes them quickly biodegradable and a soft sided pop up recycling bin or trash container that’s easy to tote.

Back to school options

August brings the dog days of summer as well as the days of back-to-school shopping.  Did you know that backpacks made of recycled materials are now available?  One company offers a backpack made of recycled rice bags, hemp and recycled PET plastics.  Another offers rulers made from a blend of recycled currency and plastics.  We even found a chemical free whiteboard cleaner.  And be sure to look for solar powered backpacks that let you recharge your electronics on sun power.

Indoor composting?

Yup.  It’s true.  Even city dwellers and apartment renters have an option for composting. Guidelines are strict recommending plant based food waste, coffee grounds and newspapers only to avoid attracting unwanted rodents.  But the containers are available to fit under your kitchen sink and seal tightly to eliminate odors.  They also offer a compost digestant to accelerate the process.

More alternatives than we can list

Cleaning supplies are the first products that typically come to mind when we think of making changes to avoid harmful chemicals and protect the environment.  But don’t stop there.  Be sure to look for new alternatives like the ones we mentioned here.  Spend some time searching online and you will find an amazing variety of options to keep you safe, healthy and support the environment too.  Appliances, technology, cars, clothing and bed linens are just a few of the things that are being developed to be kinder to our planet.
