How to Manage a Holiday Move

It’s a well-known fact that the busy season for moving is the spring and summer. The weather is consistently good and people have more time off during these months to budget time for moving. But moving during the off-peak season, specifically during the holidays, is not unheard of. This can be an especially inconvenient time of year to move due to the seasonal festivities and potentially bad weather (we’re looking at you Minnesota). But unforeseen circumstances can force a move to happen! In case you do have to manage a holiday move this season, we’ve put together some tips on how to get through it without turning into the Grinch!

Embrace the Season of Giving

Despite the challenges that come with moving during the holidays, this can be a great opportunity to give things away! Here are 4 different ways to get rid of things before you move:

  1. Donate to Charity
    • The holidays are a perfect time to donate toys, clothes, and shoes to charities such as Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, church donation boxes, a local shelter.
  2. Have a garage sale (weather permitting)
  3. Donated unused non-perishable food to a food pantry/shelter
  4. Try selling clothes, shoes and bags to a consignment shop

While it is challenging to manage a holiday move with so much going on, hopefully, you will be able to lighten your load by donating your belongings to those in need. It’s a great way to make your move easier, and help out those less fortunate!

Don’t Give Up on the Holidays

In the midst of all the chaos that comes with moving, it can be easy to discount the holidays. But this these special times only come around once a year, so don’t completely give up on the holidays! While you may have to make some sacrifices, make the most of your time with friends and family.

Thanksgiving Tip: If you don’t have time to prepare your usual Thanksgiving feast, many restaurants are open on Thanksgiving Day or offer full family-size meals you can order ahead of time. This will save you time in the kitchen, especially if your tools are packed up for the upcoming move!

What to Do When Your Holiday Move is Done

You did it! You successfully moved during the busiest time of the year — the holidays. Your first instinct may be to unpack right away. But we suggest taking the time to enjoy the rest of the holiday season now that you’re settled in your new home. Once the rush of the holiday season is over, start to unpack!

Finding the Right Balance

Moving during the holidays is a challenge, but finding the right balance between holiday obligations/enjoyment and moving is also difficult. We hope these moving tips will help get you through your holiday move, and that you’re able to create new memories wherever you are headed!
