You have probably heard it said, “There is safety in numbers”.  Sometimes, this can be applied to moving.  Times have changed, and more single women are finding themselves moving for a variety of reasons.  Single women are far more vulnerable as targets to burglaries and crime far more, both during and after a move.  Planning ahead and following some precautions can help you and your belongings have an uneventful and safer move.

Prior to moving

• Don’t tell the world you are moving!  Limit who you tell to a few good friends.  Tell them you would like to keep it private for safety reasons.  Do not tell anyone you are moving alone.

• Avoid having packages or mail sent to your new address until you have moved and settled in to your new location.  If this is not possible, get a P.O. Box for a while.

• If you have a landlord, tell them not to give out your forwarding address.  Most landlords will not give out this information, however, it is wise to make sure.

• Hire a professional moving company!  If you are unsure about a moving company, you can check their reputation through your local better Business Bureau.

• See if a friend or relative can stay with you for a few days…until the truck is unloaded and utilities are turned on.  If you bought your home through a realtor, they are usually happy to be of assistance.
